Most gym memberships are facility specific and are contingent upon non-refundable yearly contracts. This means that you are required to pay for the entire year, regardless of whether you can use it. If you know that you may be relocating within a year, it is important to pick a gym that has a transferrable membership or can be easily cancelled. If those options are not available, your best option is to wait to get your membership until after you move.

  • Can you fit gym time into your schedule?

While all exercise is beneficial, working out 3 to 4 times a week delivers the best results. This is obviously time consuming, and if you are new to working out it can be very stressful to find the time. Consult your schedule to determine if you can realistically fit in at least 12 visits to the gym every month. If you know you aren’t going to be able to make it, it is better to save the money on the membership and invest it in your home workout routine instead. There are even classes you can take right from your living room!

What services does the gym offer, and which are most important to you? Is it the equipment, the classes, or the amenities that make it worth it to you? Some gyms provide features such as saunas and hot tubs to relax post workout. Make sure you choose a membership that feels worth the price tag

  • Isjoining a gym is really necessary?

Are you ready to commit to the gym? If you are not fully devoted to the process yet, a gym membership may not be the best use of your resources. When you’re new to an exercise program it can be easier to start with small changes like going on walks every morning and following exercise videos. Then, once you are sure you are committed to regular exercise, you can join a gym knowing that it is worth your investment.
