Is CoolSculpting Effective?

Introduction

CoolSculpting is a fairly new nonsurgical body contouring procedure. During the procedure, a plastic surgeon or dermatologist uses a device to freeze fat cells under the skin in a particular area. Once these fat cells have been destroyed, they are gradually broken down and the liver removes them from the body. CoolSculpting is considered to be a low-risk, safe, and effective way to reduce the number of fat cells in areas of the body including the abdomen, thighs, upper neck, flanks, armpits, back, buttocks, and legs.

CoolSculpting, however, is not considered a treatment for obesity or weight loss. Rather it is designed to help shrink the fat cells the same way diet and exercise typically do, but at an accelerated rate. The procedure was approved by the FDA for use in the United States in 2012.

As a relatively simple and noninvasive procedure that doesn’t involve any form of surgery, tissue manipulation, or anesthesia, there is no need to be on bed rest after the procedure. Another advantage of CoolSculpting is that it is relatively comfortable. However, all procedures have risks and side effects including inflammation or stinging in the treated area, minor swelling, soreness, bruising, numbness, skin sensitivity, mild pain, and muscle cramping. The rate of side effects and complications is often correlated to the expertise of the medical professional performing the procedure, so it is important to choose your doctor carefully.

Is CoolSculpting effective?

As CoolSculpting is relatively new, thefull extent of risks, side effects, and complications associated with the procedure are still unknown.Furthermore, there is no guarantee that it is an effective method of permanent fat removal.

While some people experience little or no pain, others experience high levels of pain. Also, while the procedure worked for some people and eliminated the unnecessary fat cells in their body, others experienced Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH). This is a situation where the fat cells enlarge rather than shrink. When this happens surgery is the only option to  reverse the condition.  Another downside of this treatment is that to achieve better results, the number of treatments need toincrease, invariably increasing the cost as well.

In order to maintain results, it is advisable to pair the procedure with proper diet and consistent exercise. If you are interested in CoolSculpting treatment, it is important that you consult with your doctor who can help you decide if it’s the right treatment for you. If not, they can also suggest other fat reduction treatments that might better fit your situation.
